About our Civilian and Military unitThe 2nd United States Sharpshooter unit is a family friendly unit. We try to have at least one (1) meeting per year, and introduce any new comers that might be interested in joining our special family. We have gone to many different reenactments across the country but mainly stick to our lovely state of Michigan. Some places our unit has traveled are Pennsylvania, Indiana, Michigan, and West Virginia. We have had children in our unit that have started reenacting as early as 3 weeks old, the kids love it because it gets them outside away from electronics, and they get to play with other kids their age. Certain reenactment events hold a Ball in the evening which is always nice for the older kids and adults.
Some things our civilian unit take pleasure in doing is helping other reenactors, baking, churning butter, and educating spectators. If you are interested in reenacting, be prepared for a lot of questions such as "Is that a real fire?", "Did they really have potatoes back then?", or even our personal favorite, "Do you really eat that food?" Many reenactors get questions like these and yes, it is true for all of them, most reenactors sleep in their tents, eat the food they cook over the fire, and yes, even collect wood to make a real fire. Civilian and Military camps are kept separate, this is because that is how it was back in the 1860's, women would be home with the children while their husbands, fathers, and their brothers were off fighting the war. |
If the men come back to civilian camp to eat instead of going to military camp they are the ones that tend to do the dishes since the women were the ones cooking over a hot fire all day. Although our numbers are becoming fewer we have equaled out the camp responsibilities. Everyone is responsible for bringing their own food and camp equipment unless other plans have been arranged. We are always looking for more military recruits so if you think you're interested in the event please send us an email and we can help provide all the information you need.
